The Minnesota Timberwolves are going to need guard depth this season. Losing Donte DiVincenzo in the playoffs last year is going to be a brutal pill to swallow all year, even though LaMelo Ball is going to play the bulk of the point guard minutes. Luckily for Minnesota, Zyon Pullin has looked great, and he didn’t even need to make his shots on Friday night to prove that the Wolves need to keep him in mind this season.

Pullin was a Summer League standout for the Wolves. He’s on a two-way contract in Minnesota now, and in the Timberwolves’ final preseason game against the Chicago Bulls on Friday night, he showed out. Pullin didn’t shoot the ball well against Chicago, but he still made his impact very clear.

So, if the Wolves end up looking for backup point guard minutes behind Ball this season, Pullin is absolutely going to be throwing his hat in the ring.

Ball isn’t the only point guard on the roster. Far from it. The Wolves definitely have other guys capable of running the point guard spot, and in all honesty, Pullin probably won’t be in line for minutes right away.

Ayo Dosunmu will probably end up playing a lot of wing minutes, but at his core, he’s a backup one. He can play plenty of backup point guard minutes for Minnesota this year.

The same goes for Bones Hyland. He’s not necessarily a great playmaker, but he can absolutely handle the ball for Minnesota. And he almost certainly will on some nights.

And that’s without even considering Anthony Edwards. He’s going to be starting at the shooting guard spot, but he’ll certainly be tasked with running the offense at times.

With all of those guys already on standard contracts, Pullin seems unlikely to earn significant minutes this season. But with how he played on Friday night, he’s definitely going to try his best to earn his place on the floor.

Pullin was 0-of-3 from distance against the Bulls. He missed all his shots. Yet he still finished the night with 14 points, three rebounds, and an impressive 10 assists.

On top of that, he managed to earn himself consistent trips to the charity stripe. By the end of the game, he had shot 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.

That’s the type of performance he was churning out in Las Vegas this summer. If he can keep doing that throughout the year when given the chance – even in the G League – he may force Chris Finch to consider him for backup point guard minutes at some point down the line.
