Tyus Jones: Timberwolves 2015 NBA Draft Profile
Apr 6, 2015; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Duke Blue Devils guard Tyus Jones (5) reacts after hitting a three-point shot against the Wisconsin Badgers during the second half in the 2015 NCAA Men
Fit with the Timberwolves:
If Saunders does decide to move up into the mid-to-late first round and grab Jones, he’ll likely find himself in the backup point guard role that is currently a huge weakness for this roster. In terms of filling a void in the roster, Jones is a great fit. He would be a solid compliment to Ricky Rubio off the bench. Additionally, if Rubio would go down to injury, Zach LaVine (although he’s more suited for the shooting guard spot) could step into the starting point guard role so Jones wouldn’t be forced into a starting role right away.
Defensively, the Timberwolves were dreadful last season and it scares me a little to think of bringing Jones in despite his weak defense. Saunders will ultimately decide if it’s worth it for the Wolves to move up and draft a point guard like Jones who doesn’t bring much to the table defensively. There are a few other point guards that we’ll profile here on DWW that the Timberwolves will undoubtedly look at that could be a better fit.
Overall, I don’t expect the Wolves to end up with Jones. However, the idea of Jones playing in Minnesota with the large fanbase he has there is interesting. Adding on the possibility of his Duke teammate Jahlil Okafor going first overall to the Timberwolves and the possibility of Jones also going to Minnesota becomes even more exciting.
