2024 NBA Draft: Timberwolves draft needs

The Minnesota Timberwolves will certainly need to reinforce their roster at this point. After two seasons from the Rudy Gobert/Mike Conley Jr. trades, the team will need to reassess and perhaps realign the Timberwolves roster to address new vulnerabilities and shallow roster depth.

  • Point Guard: The team will need to align this backcourt field general along with shooting guard Anthony Edward’s timeline. If the team had not done so to this point, they will need to add a top-notch point guard. Will a 2024-25 rookie point guard fill that need? Perhaps. If the Timberwolves do not address the need in the 2023 NBA Draft or via the NBA Free Agency market, you have to believe this is their top priority
  • Front court: The Timberwolves may or may not extend their veterans in the front court. As such, the Timberwolves may need to look into reinforcements at these positions as well.
  • Perimeter shooting: Still not a great deal of originality in this one. Every NBA team constantly seeks perimeter shooters, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are no different. With the team committing to their two bigs, the Timberwolves will need to ensure that their roster not only has players who can shoot from beyond the arc but players who can defend that area of the basketball court as well.
  • Bench depth: This is that catch-all category that must be included, simply because the Timberwolves have a great deal of uncertainty beyond this point in time. Will the Timberwolves retreat from their commitment to field two bigs? If so, does this team trade Karl-Anthony Towns (more likely) or Rudy Gobert (less likely)? If a trade does happen, the Timberwolves will need to ensure that the roster is properly configured to complement Anthony Edwards going forward.

There is nothing unique about this shopping list. Just the basic ‘needs help,’ list that all NBA teams will be looking at.

And there you are. While we are still over a year out from the 2024 NBA Draft and haven’t any idea when the Timberwolves’ picks will fall in either Round 1 or Round 2,  there is no doubt that the 2024 NBA Draft will be very important.  This team will be selecting a new pair of rookies to add to the roster during the course of the draft, and we know that the Timberwolves will have plenty of pressure to get it right.
