In professional sports, becoming a successful NBA team is not the same thing as becoming an NBA Championship team. Unfortunately, when it comes to the Minnesota Timberwolves, there are no past NBA Champions to help mentor this team. So when it comes to figuring out how to get there and who the Timberwolves roster will need to get the job done, Head Coach Chris Finch is on his own.

And that is not an easy place to be for an NBA head coach. Everyone is a critic, and yet it’s Finch’s job on the line. Everyone has ideas, but only Coach Finch faces the consequences if it’s a bad idea. Everyone has a lineup that should have been rotated in at some point in the game, but only HC Chris Finch sees the team dynamics in the gym and throughout workouts, and he has to navigate the pitfalls of duplicating similar skills that leave other vital roles too thin.

In a short summary, Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch does not have an easy task this season.

Timberwolves roster talent upgrades raise the bar for Coach Finch

With the start of the 2022-23 NBA season, high hopes ran wild over the Minnesota Timberwolves’ chances to advance beyond Round 1 of the 2023 NBA Playoffs. But an onslaught of injuries, led by the 53-game absence of All-Star PF Karl-Anthony Towns, derailed those lofty goals pretty quickly.

But the Timberwolves roster shakeup trying to patch the lineup also revealed that the team was a bit dysfunctional at point guard, necessitating a trade of PG D’Angelo Russell in a three-team swap to acquire PG Mike Conley Jr., SG Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and three future second-round draft picks.

The Timberwolves, injuries and all, showed tremendous grit to scratch and claw their way into the 2023 NBA Playoffs, but were stopped for the second consecutive season in Round 1. This year, the Timberwolves will not only need to get to the 2024 NBA Playoffs but will need to advance further than Round 1 in the NBA Playoffs this year.
