When the Minnesota Timberwolves hired the new President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly, they knew how he had transformed the Denver Nuggets franchise from a punch line into NBA headlines. And yet, the impact of his role truly manifested when those very same Nuggets were finally able to win the 2023 NBA Championship.

When it comes to Connelly, he understands how to handle the business side of the NBA already. The guy emerged from a grueling marathon that was the 2022 NBA Draft and still took the time to shed some light on where the team goes from here.

And his first NBA Draft for the Minnesota Timberwolves truly set the tone for the rest of his oversight of this team:

The Minnesota Timberwolves may not have been an NBA Championship-caliber team in 2021-22. But the Timberwolves were a playoff team. Still, the challenge facing Connelly was the fact that in order to transform the team, the Timberwolves roster had to take one step backward to take two steps forward.

That step backward was putting such a high cost to acquire a third NBA All-Star, center Rudy Gobert.

In the grand scheme of things, the Timberwolves’ ability to add young talent has not been interrupted in the least. In some ways, the absence of multiple draft picks may simply amplify the clarity and focus of the Timberwolves front office.

Nobody could have projected the absence of PF Karl-Anthony Towns for 53 games in the 2022-23 NBA season. But It is also true that without the willingness to gamble on adding Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves may never have earned a second consecutive berth to compete in the NBA Playoffs.

The truth is that like it or not, the Minnesota Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly has a plan in place, a chess-like strategy, and I for one believe that it will show up on the basketball court this season. Stay tuned!
