Anthony Edwards' latest unique goal makes him more like Jordan than ever before
By Will Eudy
One of the most standout qualities of Anthony Edwards has always been his ambitious mentality. Minnesota Timberwolves fans remember in his rookie season when he told a reporter he would dominate in any sport or competition he played in. It is certainly an endearing personality trait at times, but it also points to why he has achieved as much success as he has in the top basketball league in the world.
A wise man once said that you have to be just a little bit delusional to achieve your goals and to reach heights that you could only dream of. Edwards embodies that theory to a tee, and it shows in his most recent viral quote. Sitting down with Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson for an ESPN interview, Edwards shocked listeners with his latest declaration.
In discussing the difficulties of their respective sports, Edwards told Jefferson that "football players can't go play basketball," which of course led to Justin pushing back on Ant's claim. "You're crazy," said the three-time Pro Bowler. "I told my buddies," Edwards continued. "I said, if I win a ring in the next three to four years, I'm going to play football."
Edwards: "I'm going to play football" if I win a ring in next 3-4 years
This is such an on-brand comment for Edwards, and one that is sure to bring a smile to the faces of Timberwolves fans everywhere. Whether or not he actually follows through on this statement, it is the most Anthony Edwards sentiment possible.
Of course, plenty are probably just excited at the prospect of Edwards playing football period. The hype that would come from him crossing over and playing football, even for a short time, would be otherworldly. Ant putting on pads and a Vikings football uniform might bring out every single resident of Minneapolis to see him play.
But perhaps the biggest reason Edwards' statement is noteworthy is that it serves to deepen the comparisons between he and the legendary Michael Jordan. Fans and analysts have compared Ant's game, work ethic and personality to the greatest basketball player of all-time for a long while, and switching sports is yet another thing that MJ did during his NBA career. For those unaware, Jordan played with the minor league Birmingham Barons during the summer of 1994, during his peak physical prime.
Edwards switching out the roundball for the pigskin would be internet-breaking news, and it would undoubtedly further the narrative that he is the Michael Jordan of this generation. But if he ever does leave the sport of basketball for football, Timberwolves fans would know that their team finally took home a championship before it happened.
