Anthony Edwards' recent play highlights the Timberwolves' secret superpower

What looked like it might be a bad loss turned into a come-from-behind victory for the Timberwolves on Saturday. Trailing the Clippers by 14 at halftime and six entering the fourth quarter, a late 3-pointer by Naz Reid proved to be the game-winning shot.

Minnesota exhibited superb ball movement on that play, with the last dish to Reid being done by Anthony Edwards. It was an unselfish pass on a night where the superstar couldn’t get going on the offensive end. It’s the second-straight game Edwards hasn’t scored all that well, but the Timberwolves still found a way to win both.

Two straight subpar offensive outings for Edwards still lead to two Timberwolves wins

It was a strange game for the Wolves on Saturday. It is also a good sign for the team in that they aren’t too reliant on Ant-Man. The team was able to make their second-half comeback against the Clippers despite Edwards not making a single field goal over the final 24 minutes.

In the third and fourth quarters, the 24-year-old missed all six of his field goal tries, scoring three points over that time via the free-throw line. It was also a second half in which Minnesota outscored LA, 67-50. Edwards had 12 points in the first half, giving him 15 for the game.

Rewind to the Wolves’ previous game on Thursday, where the Timberwolves won 125-116 over the Pelicans. It was another odd game as Edwards had more turnovers (eight) than field goal attempts (six). He finished with 11 points, just the seventh-highest total for a Wolves player that night.

Even after totaling just 26 points in the last two outings, Edwards is still averaging 28.1 points per contest, good for the eighth-most in the league. By all accounts, this is the best season of his career, but it's still a great sign that the Wolves can win on his off nights.

5-1 when Ant scores less than 20

One of the game’s top scorers, Edwards, just like anyone, will have some off nights during the course of an 82-game season. What has been great to see is how others on the team have been able to pick up their play when he is struggling. That’s been the case all season, not just the last two games.

There have now been six times over his first 19 appearances this year where Edwards has scored less than 20 points (including the October 26 game against the Pacers when he left after three minutes due to injury). Minnesota is 5-1 in those games. The only loss came against the Knicks when Edwards had 15 points, his first game back after missing four in a row with a right hamstring strain.

Last season, Edwards scored less than 20 points in 15 different contests. The Timberwolves went 8-7 in those games.
