Saturday afternoon featured a massive victory for the Minnesota Timberwolves. With the Denver Nuggets in town for a second time this season, a big clash against a bitter rival was on the way for the Wolves. Leading up to game day, we did not even know if Anthony Edwards was going to be available to play. He had been listed as questionable with an illness on Friday's injury report.
But not only did Ant play, he put up another fantastic outing with 34 points and achieved a remarkable franchise record in the process. Edwards nailed three three-point shots, the final of which made him the Timberwolves' all-time leader in threes made. He has now officially surpassed Karl-Anthony Towns as the most proficient three-point shooter in Minnesota history.
We had known for weeks that Ant was on the verge of eclipsing this mark. At one point, we even thought it was possible he could break the record a week ago against the New York Knicks (and do it in front of KAT, the previous record-holder).
But we knew Edwards was not gunning for the record in particular. He is in the business of winning basketball games, and this achievement just naturally came as a result of that.
Edwards is now the Timberwolves' all-time leader in made threes
It was Edwards' play that helped transform a close contest with Denver into a blowout on Saturday. After the Nuggets cut the Timberwolves' lead to three points on multiple occasions in the second quarter, Minnesota used a big second half to send Denver home with a loss.
Scoring in the clutch has been one of the Wolves' biggest Achilles heels all season long, but they played well enough to avoid even putting themselves in that situation this go-around. On top of Edwards' record-setting night, Jaden McDaniels had another strong showing, and Rudy Gobert looked much better on the boards as well.
It was one of the more complete games this team has played all season, and they did it against a Nuggets team that had won eight of their last nine games. Minnesota is continuing to figure things out, and this could be one of the games we look back on as a signature victory for this squad.
