Chris Finch gives glowing review for Rob Dillingham's performance so far

The Minnesota Timberwolves are beginning to round into form. After falling in three straight contests which included a two-game losing streak to the Portland Trail Blazers, the Wolves have gotten back on track with consecutive clutch time wins over the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. There are still problems to address, but earning tough victories with all the chips on the table is a step forward for Minnesota.
As the Timberwolves find themselves back in the win column, there are individual performances worthy of addressing as well. Donte DiVincenzo had been going through a prolonged rough stretch to begin his time in Minnesota, but he just put up arguably his best outing since joining the Wolves against Phoenix on Sunday.
Then there is the rookie, Rob Dillingham. The eighth-overall pick just saw his draft classmate, Terrence Shannon Jr., get his first G League assignment of the season on Tuesday. Shannon will go get some valuable reps with the Iowa Wolves, but Dillingham remains with the NBA club where he has still been playing sparingly.
However, a lack of big minutes does not mean that he has not been progressing, and it does not mean Chris Finch has failed to take notice of the youngster's winning habits. The Timberwolves' coach spoke about Dillingham at Minnesota's practice on Tuesday.
Finch had big words for Dillingham
"He's played really well," said Finch. "The ball has moved, the tempo has picked up. He's made a lot of really good decisions, he's competed on defense, been very pleased with him." From coach's assessment, it seems that Rob is making just about all the right decisions he can at this point in time.
When you are a young prospect with a lot of room to grow and a high ceiling, it can sometimes be easy to get caught up in it all and believe your own hype. But from the sound of it, Dillingham has bought into the process and understands that a time and place will come where he becomes a regular contributor. For now, he works in the shadows.
Finch's words make it apparent that Rob is learning the pace of the NBA game and adapting to it, which is frankly a major adjustment to make. Throw in being a willing passer and putting in passable effort at the defensive end, and I would say Dillingham is coming along more than fine.
As we are seeing unfold in real time, the insertion of Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo into this team's rotation likely changed the trajectory of when Dillingham will get meaningful minutes. But in the meantime, it seems he is willing to embrace the role the team needs him in and do what is best for the team. These are wonderful signs for his future.
