The Minnesota Timberwolves desperately need some extra ball-handling and general depth. That has been clear all season long, but amid a five-game losing streak (the team's longest losing streak since 2022), Minnesota's need for a trade deadline move has never been clearer.
Mike Conley looks unplayable, Bones Hyland is wildly inconsistent, and Rob Dillingham can't crack the rotation. If the Wolves are serious about contending for a title, they need someone who can take the pressure off Anthony Edwards in the backcourt.
Thankfully, though, there are plenty of affordable trade targets. Two names the Wolves have long been connected to are Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. Recently, trusted NBA insider Marc Stein confirmed the availability of these two Chicago Bulls guards.
"Rumbles persist this winter that the Bulls are eager to make a move by capitalizing on some of their expiring contracts... with both Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu most frequently mentioned as potential outgoings," Stein wrote.
Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu are clear trade targets for the Wolves
Undoubtedly, White and Dosunmu are trade targets to watch for the Wolves ahead of the February 5 deadline.
Trading for either White or Dosunmu is a bit complicated, given their status as pending free agents. Regardless, this will also lower the price for both of these players -- as such, the Wolves should pounce on an opportunity to trade for either player.
It's not too far-fetched to suggest that some combination of Conley, young talent, and draft capital could strike a deal with Chicago. With a move like this, the Wolves would be well-positioned to make another deep playoff run.
Of the two players, I prefer Dosunmu's fit (and lower price point). Dosunmu is a dependable 3-point shooting threat, netting an absurd 45.7 percent of his triples. His off-ball abilities make him a smooth fit with the Wolves. Perhaps more importantly, though, Ayo is a high-level perimeter defender -- which is something that the Wolves need and White can't offer.
Nevertheless, there's no denying that White has more offensive upside, and if you're looking to swing for the fences, trading for him certainly makes a lot of sense.
I believe the Wolves have the assets to trade for him. Things could get tricky, though, if White demands a hefty contract this offseason. Still, as a higher upside trade target, White is certainly worth pursuing for the Wolves.
Ultimately, Minnesota must make a trade for a point guard, and the Bulls have two readily available PGs (three if Tre Jones is available), which is something the Wolves can't afford to overlook.
