Timberwolves have a painfully obvious trade target who is already available

Coby White could be a perfect fit, and he's cost-effective.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been attached to nearly every attainable point guard in the association, and given the hole they have at the position, landing one of them seems more likely than not.

When it comes to available players, there are the star point guards like Ja Morant, LaMelo Ball, and Darius Garland. But all of them have a lofty price tag that will mean giving up significant contracts and assets. There are also role players such as Tre Jones, Dennis Schroder, and Tre Mann who could work, but it is questionable how much of an upgrade they'll actually be.

Then there is Coby White, who is on the contract of a role player, but gives you near All-Star production at almost 20 PPG while shooting an elite 50 percent in clutch time situations. Undoubtedly, White would be an ideal fit next to Anthony Edwards in the backcourt. Reporting from Jake Fischer and Joe Cowley confirms that the Chicago Bulls guard is available.

White is in the final year of a three-year, $36 million contract, and despite only playing in 18 games this year due to injury, he's been durable throughout his career. In his last three seasons, he's played in 74, 79, and 74 games, respectively.

Due to his cheaper, expiring contract, the Wolves shouldn't need to trade any of their core pieces to acquire him. Rob Dillingham would almost certainly be included in the trade, and given how he's performed this year, a change of scenery seems necessary. The next piece to trade would have to be one of Donte DiVincenzo or Mike Conley.

The Wolves should not trade Donte DiVincenzo

Despite having some games where he seemingly couldn't throw a rock into an ocean, DiVincenzo is a winning player every game. He's the dirty work guy, he has championship experience, and the Wolves are so much better when he is on the court. Since the new year, DiVincenzo leads the NBA in +/- at +100 (shoutout Bones Hyland too).

If there is a way for the Wolves to get White while keeping DiVincenzo, they need to be all over it. This is where the unfortunate reality of trading Conley might need to come into play.

It might be time to trade Mike Conley

I get it. Mike Conley is the veteran leader; he's maybe the nicest dude in the NBA, and he's a huge locker room presence. But the reality is that Father Time has caught up to him. If the playoffs started today, Conley would not be able to be in the rotation.

If the Wolves can get White at the cost of a Conley/Dillingham package, that should be a no-brainer. Plus, the Bulls have no use for Conley, so there is a possibility for a buyout, where he could join a championship contender.

I understand the unwritten rule about trading someone like Conley. Regardless, if the Wolves believe they have a real shot at a championship this year, and you can get someone of White's caliber for two guys that aren't going to be in the playoff rotation, you have to pull the trigger.
