Seeing Karl-Anthony Towns win a championship with the New York Knicks was filled with mixed emotions for Minnesota Timberwolves fans. As if that wasn't enough already, KAT praised Anthony Edwards for helping him grow and the two even Facetimed after the Knicks' Game 5 win.
"Shout-out to my brother Anthony Edwards, talking to him all the time. Those guys made me better; they made me a better leader, they made me a better player, made me the man I am today. Forever grateful for them," Towns said.
If you are a Timberwolves fan, it's hard not to be emotional on some level after hearing this. Beyond simply being happy for Towns after such a remarkable championship run, it's touching to see how close he and Ant are -- it shows they have a never-ending bond.
While most fans are happy for KAT, given the trade two years ago, there's a clear bittersweet element to this moment. As such, fans understandably had a wide range of reactions, especially after this quote.
Let’s go KAT. Wolf for life 🐺 https://t.co/xtyYwj93XG

I still do not understand what made the timberwolves go with Julius Randle of all people over KAT https://t.co/jylw4HuAJP

Seeing KAT reach new heights is bittersweet for Timberwolves fans
Towns has evolved his game with the Knicks. He has limited some of his common mistakes, played the best defense of his career and turned into a legitimate offensive hub with his passing. In the finals, KAT was crucial to limiting Victor Wembanyama, who shot just 38.1 percent when guarded by Towns.
Overall, in the playoffs, Towns averaged well-rounded numbers of 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.6 stocks.
Seeing KAT blossom into the actualized version of himself is certainly awesome. At the same time, seeing it happen in a different uniform stings a bit for Wolves fans, especially since Julius Randle is, within all likelihood, going to be traded after a disastrous playoffs.
Now, the trade was mostly done for financial reasons and it's unfair to say that it was an indefensible move for Minnesota. But there's no denying that seeing how things have played out, it stings.
This new version of KAT would solve so many problems for the Wolves. Seeing how well Towns matched up with Wemby and the Spurs has to make you wonder "what-if."
Towns joins Kevin Garnett and Andrew Wiggins as notable former Wolves to win a championship shortly after leaving Minnesota. The Wolves are in the midst of their most successful run in franchise history and with some smart moves, hopefully, they'll be able to win a championship of their own soon enough.
Regardless of the bittersweet nature of Towns' championship run, he is an all-time great Timberwolves player, whose No. 32 will one day be retired and Wolves fans will always be rooting for him. Undoubtedly, KAT's quote about Edwards is the perfect way to cap off all the emotions Wolves fans have felt during this Knicks run.
