The PGA Tour will tee off at TPC Twin Cities for the 3M Open beginning on Thursday, July 24. There were various sports stars from the area at the opening events, including Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley. In between showing off his golf swing, he spoke with KSTP-TV Channel 5 of Minnesota about the offseason.

Conley is excited about the Wolves new ownership

The long-anticipated sale of the Timberwolves was finally completed on June 24. Marc Lore, the founder of the Wonder Group, and Alex Rodriguez, former MLB superstar, became the new co-owners of the NBA franchise (as well as the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx). The process of them becoming the new owners had been going on for years, and at times was messy.

Speaking on the finally finalized sale, Conley said,

“Yeah, I think we’re all excited about it. We’re excited for it to all be resolved, and we’ve obviously gotten to know A-Rod and the gang for a while. They’ve been around the team. Marc has been around the team for a while, so it’s good to know that it’s finally in their hands and move forward from that and looking forward to what they have in store for us.”

While the ongoing ownership battle probably wasn’t a huge distraction for the players, it’s certainly a relief that it has been resolved. Rodriguez compared himself during a summer league interview to longtime former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner in that their passion for wanting to win is almost a sickness. That is something Wolves fans hope to see as the franchise is searching for their first championship.

Will Miss Nickeil-Alexander Walker

Conley showed his age a bit (turns 38 on October 11) by sharing that he’s out of the loop when it comes to the newer, trendy music. That’s where the recently departed Nickeil-Alexander Walker has come in handy.

“We talk all the time. He sends me the newest music all the time; it’s kind of our thing. I’m like, ‘I don’t know what’s new out there, you have to send me the newest playlist.’ So he sends me stuff like every other week, and I just forget that he’s not going to be with us. The friendship will always be there, proud of him and everything he’s accomplished, and super excited for him to be in Atlanta.”

The two developed a strong bond as they had previously been teammates with the Jazz. The two were both traded to Minnesota in February of 2023. Alexander-Walker joined the Hawks in a sign-and-trade this offseason.
