Recently, it was announced that Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook is opting out of his $3.3 million player option and testing free agency. A playmaking guard is a clear need for the Minnesota Timberwolves this offseason. Westbrook could be a possible solution for the Wolves.

The veteran guard is coming off a stellar 17th season where he averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists. Perhaps Westbrook is eyeing a return to Denver given this success. However, if Westbrook is looking for a new home, Minnesota would be a logical landing spot. Let's dive into Westbrook's fit with the Wolves.

Westbrook's fit with the Wolves

While Westbrook isn't a star anymore, he is a highly productive and versatile role player. Westbrook remains a high-level playmaker. Moreover, Westbrook can still create his own shot and is a relentless finisher. In addition to playmaking, the Wolves need extra perimeter shot creation and players who can generate rim pressure, making Westbrook a fit. Westbrook is also a tenacious perimeter defender.

In recent years, Westbrook has shown the ability to buy into a smaller yet impactful role, especially with the Nuggets and Clippers. He has been particularly more active off-ball. Westbrook still struggles to shoot and has some questionable decision-making at times. However, he provides value in every other aspect. For the Wolves, his playmaking and ability to attack the rim would be the most impactful.

At 6-foot-4, Westbrook could play alongside Mike Conley and Rob Dillingham if needed. Conley's minutes need to be reduced a bit, and it's unclear if Dillingham is ready for a bigger role. Westbrook offers a stopgap solution for the Wolves' point guard problems. Dillingham would have the opportunity to learn from Westbrook and possibly even play next to him at times.

From an energy and athleticism perspective, Westbrook's fit next to Anthony Edwards is highly intriguing. Additionally, Westbrook's playmaking and shot creation ability would benefit Edwards more than anyone else on the roster. Overall, Westbrook's possible fit with Minnesota is clear, and he could help them reach their title goals.

Given Westbrook's previous contract and age, he's also an affordable option for the Wolves. From his perspective, the ability to compete for a title contender would make the Wolves an exciting destination. Ultimately, Westbrook signing with the Timberwolves would make sense for both sides, and it's a possibility to keep an eye on ahead of free agency.
