Kevin Durant is set to be traded this offseason, and the Minnesota Timberwolves have been linked to him since the trade deadline. Landing Durant would secure the Wolves' status as clear title contenders. Durant's fit as a three-level scorer next to Anthony Edwards is obvious. A recent report from Shams Charania indicates four to six teams are vying for Durant's services. Similarly, Phoenix Suns radio host and reporter John Gambadoro mentioned the San Antonio Spurs as a clear destination for Durant.

"The team that I heard last night in speaking with somebody pretty close to the situation with KD is 'keep your eye on the Spurs. That KD could have some interest in the Spurs with Fox and Wembanyama." Gambadoro said.

Gambadoro's comments come after Shams reported that the Spurs and Durant had mutual interest at the deadline. With more draft capital and intriguing young players at their disposal, the Spurs could certainly outbid the Wolves. If Durant is motivated to join the Spurs, that could also be a factor. Basketball-wise, the fit between Durant and Victor Wembanyama is clear. Nevertheless, losing out on their coveted trade target would be a tough blow for the Wolves.

The Spurs can outbid the Wolves

The Spurs' offer would likely center around the No. 14 pick, Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, and future draft picks. While the Wolves' package is less clear. One scenario is a deal centered around Jaden McDaniels and Donte DiVincenzo with the No. 17 pick. A three-team sign-and-trade with Randle or him opting into his contract and being traded doesn't seem as likely, but it can't be ruled out.

The major advantage the Spurs have over the Wolves is future draft capital. Minnesota only has the No. 17 pick in this year's draft and its 2028 pick. Conversely, the Spurs have eight first-round picks from 2025 to 2031. If it turns into a bidding war for Durant, the Wolves would likely have to include a young player like Rob Dillingham or Terrence Shannon Jr. to compensate for a lack of draft capital. Gambadoro also notes that the Suns are likely to trade Durant before the draft as they are seeking draft capital.

If Durant makes it clear that the Spurs are his preferred destination, that could give them another advantage. Regardless, Durant would likely welcome a trade to Minnesota given his connection to Edwards and the ability to compete for a title. If the Spurs truly covet Durant, they certainly have the assets to pull off a move.

Minnesota shouldn't be ruled out in the Durant sweepstakes, but they undoubtedly have some steep competition. The Houston Rockets are another team that has been linked to Durant and could make a highly enticing offer, especially since they own many of the Suns' future picks. Ultimately, only time will tell if the Wolves will be able to make a legitimate run at Durant.
