It was reported by Shams Charania that contract extension talks have stagnated between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Karl-Anthony Towns. Now, I want to be clear when I say this: if a Minnesota Timberwolves reunion happens, it isn't going to be for quite some time. I fully expect Towns to reach a new deal with the Knicks, and he'll likely spend the rest of his prime in the Mecca.
But as we've seen with Kevin Garnett, and potentially with Kevin Love if he and the Wolves can agree on a deal, it's not impossible for a franchise icon to return to the team they grew up with before their career ends. I've always had a hunch that Towns' Wolves story hasn't finished being written yet.
He could finish where he started
My entire childhood was spent watching bad Wolves teams carried by Towns. He was deemed a losing player for so long, and when he broke through and won the championship with the Knicks, it felt almost as good as the Wolves winning one.
He never wanted to leave Minnesota, and he would give numerous quotes in interviews stating that he wished to spend his entire career in the Twin Cities. But unfortunately, the second apron exists, and the Wolves hand was forced, as they could have potentially needed to forfeit draft capital to keep Towns on the team long-term.
He still maintains a strong relationship with Anthony Edwards specifically, as it was reported that Edwards would FaceTime him during the NBA Finals to give him advice. With Edwards (hopefully) going to spend at the very least the next decade in Minnesota, it would be a nice feel-good story for them to share the court as teammates again as Towns' career winds to a close.
Towns could be the rare player whose number was retired by two different franchises. In Minnesota, he's arguably a top-three player all-time for their team, and in New York, he was the second-best player on the team that broke their championship curse, and he will likely have a lot of years left to further cement his Knicks legacy, too.
Close your eyes for a second, and imagine the Minnesota Timberwolves in seven years. Edwards, LaMelo Ball, and Jaden McDaniels are in their early 30s, still playing elite basketball. Joan Beringer has broken out into one of the best bigs in the league, and to back him up is 37-year-old Karl-Anthony Towns, back in the place that raised him for one final hoorah.
That would make every Wolves fan smile.
