Timberwolves can't afford for LaMelo Ball to be just a playmaker

He needs to look for his shot more often than he has been.

The LaMelo Ball experience has been about 95 percent awesome so far with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He makes life on the basketball court incredibly easy for everyone around him, and the infectious positive energy he brings to the court bleeds into the rest of the roster in all of the best ways.

The only reason I used 95 and not 100 percent was because, through four games, he hasn't been nearly as aggressive on offense as you would like your second option to be. He's only averaging a modest 14.8 points so far this season, and he only eclipsed the 20-point mark in the opening win against the Miami Heat.

Again, he's been awesome, but the Wolves needed more offense from anyone, with the exception of Anthony Edwards, during their latest game, which resulted in an overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. We've seen him be a 25-point-per-game guy in this league, and for the Wolves to hit their ceiling offensively, he needs to look to get himself involved just as much as he does others.

LaMelo Ball just has to shoot the ball more -- simple as that

So far, albeit with a small sample size, Ball is shooting the lowest amount of shots per game, and the second lowest amount of three-point shots per game in his career. It's understandable that in his first few games with a brand-new team, he wants to prioritize getting everyone involved, but he needs to find the balance between that and asserting himself as a scorer.

In defense of Ball, this is a much newer situation than he's used to, so he's likely just trying to figure out the balance of being a scorer and the main facilitator in a different role. He's been the number one option every season of his career except for this one, where he obviously has a back seat to Anthony Edwards scoring-wise.

Personally, I'd like to see Ball jack up some of his patented wild 3-point looks. They always look like pretty bad shots in the moment, but he has a long history of being able to make them, too. The Wolves' next game is against the Golden State Warriors, who are pretty void of capable perimeter defenders.

I would expect a classic Ball explosion in that game. It will be the second home game of the season and the Wolves' first game against a Western Conference opponent. Coming off his worst game in a Wolves uniform in Cleveland, he'll want to turn up in a big way to bounce back and show the fanbase how gifted a scorer he is.
