Listen, nobody associated with the Minnesota Timberwolves is happy to be playing the Denver Nuggets in the first-round. There's no denying that the Los Angeles Lakers would have been the easier matchup, with Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic dealing with injuries. If you are upset as a Wolves fan given that matching up with the Nuggets significantly increases the likelihood of a first-round exit, I totally get it.
Nevertheless, zooming out from a pure basketball standpoint, another Wolves-Nuggets series will be absolute cinema. Two years ago, the Wolves pulled off an upset in a classic seven-game series, and since then, we've gotten plenty of great regular season games between these two teams.
This is one of the true rivalries in the NBA -- the two teams don't like each other, the games are always competitive, and the two styles of play contrast.
On the other hand, a hypothetical Wolves-Lakers matchup would have likely ended in a short series. While it would have been great for the Wolves to have a nearly guaranteed chance to move on to the second-round, we are now going to get a much better basketball series, which is a clear positive regardless of the result.
Timberwolves-Nuggets should be a fantastic first-round series
Objectively speaking, this should be one of the more competitive and closely contested series.
Yes, the Nuggets are heavy favorites and are riding a 12-game winning streak. However, you'd be foolish to believe that Anthony Edwards and company will go down without a fight. The Nuggets' poor defense and lack of a natural matchup for Ant are poised to make this series interesting. This, paired with Nikola Jokic's so-so rim protection, could set up Ant for a monster series.
Denver's poor transition defense could also benefit the Wolves, who have adopted a faster pace style this season.
Furthermore, the Wolves have always played well against the Nuggets. Even putting aside their 2024 upset over Denver, in the 2024-25 season, they swept the Nuggets, and in 2023, they played the eventual champs tougher than anyone in the playoffs, despite being without Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid.
On the other side of things, seeing how the Wolves defend Nikola Jokic will be fascinating. Will the Nuggets' improved 3-point shooting and bench production be too much for the Wolves to handle? And who will provide consistent scoring production on the Wolves outside of Ant-Man?
You get the point, we are in for an absolute treat basketball-wise.
There are also fun subplots, including Bones Hyland's revenge and Tim Connelly's connection with the Nuggets.
I understand if you can't get past the Wolves drawing an unfavorable matchup. Regardless, as a basketball fan, it's hard not to be excited about this series.
