The Minnesota Timberwolves' pursuit of Kevin Durant fell short for multiple reasons. One of them was that Durant didn't want to play in Minnesota. However, another key reason is that the Wolves are focused on re-signing Naz Reid. By trading for Durant, it would have been more challenging to re-sign Reid. Additionally, Rudy Gobert would have likely been the centerpiece of a Durant trade.

If this move had happened, the Wolves' center rotation would have been shaky, and even if they re-signed Reid, their defense would have taken a step back. Keeping Reid and Gobert was a clear factor in not making a move for Durant.

Reid's value to the Wolves is clear

Reid is coming off a career-best season where he averaged 14.2 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on 46.2/37.9/77.6 shooting splits. His impact as a secondary creator, floor spacer, and playmaker is immense, especially given his size. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported once again that the Wolves are prioritizing re-signing Reid this offseason. Undoubtedly, Reid has been a key part of the Wolves' success, and they are making him a clear part of their core.

After not trading for Durant, the Wolves are likely to run it back with a similar roster. By choosing to stand pat, the Wolves are valuing continuity and Reid's scoring abilities. It also shows that they believe in Reid next to Gobert's rim protection. If they traded for Durant, Reid would likely be Minnesota's starting center. However, Reid can't anchor a defense and struggles as a rim protector. HoopsHype also mentioned the defensive concerns of bringing in Durant without Gobert. As a result, keeping Gobert next to Reid is a logical move for the Wolves.

Balance wins championships in the NBA rather than elite defense or offense. The Wolves have the needed balance to win a title. Trading for Durant despite his clear fit offensively next to Anthony Edwards as a three-level scorer would ignore some defensive concerns. Minnesota's combination of balance and depth around Edwards benefits their title chances.

The Wolves have a championship-level core with Edwards, Julius Randle, Jaden McDaniels, Reid, and Gobert. While they aren't a perfect team, the Wolves just made the Western Conference Finals and are clear title contenders. If Reid and/or McDaniels further improve as shot creators, the Wolves' championship chances will certainly increase.

At 25 and 24, respectively, this scenario can't be counted out. This isn't to say either player can become a star. However, becoming a bit more consistent as scorers could make a massive difference. Overall, the Wolves' confidence in Reid is clear, and they'll likely re-sign him to a sizable contract.
