Donte DiVincenzo put together a solid campaign in his first season with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He recorded averages of 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists on 42.2/39.7/77.8 shooting splits. As a spot-up shooter, on-ball defender, and secondary creator, DiVincenzo's impact is immense. However, what often gets under-discussed is his contract. Currently, DiVincenzo has two years left on his deal worth $24.5 million.
Back in 2023, DiVincenzo signed with the Knicks for a deal worth $46.8 million over four years. What followed was a breakout season for DiVincenzo, where he averaged 15.5 points and broke the Knicks franchise record for most 3-pointers in a single season. DiVincenzo was a sticking point for Minnesota in the famous Karl-Anthony Towns-Julius Randle trade. Overall, to be paying one of the best role players in the league below $15 million a year is incredible value in the modern NBA.
Comparing DiVincenzo's contracts to others in the league
When comparing DiVincenzo's contract to similar players around the league, his value stands out. Immanuel Quickley, who also plays a similar role as a microwave scorer off the bench, is on a four-year $130 million deal. DiVincenzo is arguably a more impactful player while making roughly $20 million less. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has two years left on his contract worth $43.2 million. At his best, KCP is a high-level 3-and-D wing, but he has declined as a shooter, and this contract was always an overpay.
Malik Monk (three years, $60.5 million), Max Strus (two years, $32.6 million), Bogdan Bogdanović (two years $32 million), and Grayson Allen (three years $54.4 million) are four other examples. With the possible expectation of Monk, DiVincenzo is a better player than everyone in this group, and the value of his contract stands out.
Even his teammate Naz Reid's newly inked five-year $125 million contract is a stark difference from DiVincenzo's current contract. Reid plays a much different role and is a rarer archetype as a shot creator with size. Still, it goes to show the price of high-level role players.
DiVincenzo is due for an extension
All good things must come to an end, and as noted, DiVincenzo's contract is up in 2027. He is currently extension-eligible for a three-year deal worth $64.5 million. There are no signs that the Wolves are close to a deal with DiVincenzo; his re-aggravated toe injury certainly complicates things.
Nevertheless, this range feels likely for DiVincenzo's next contract, whether the Wolves agree to an extension with him or the two sides opt to play it out until 2027. Making around $21.5 million is closer to DiVincenzo's market value and impact. For now, however, Wolves fans can enjoy the benefits of having one of the league's best value contracts.
